I came across a reddit post today where someone mentioned a YouTube chipping video that multiple people responded as finding extremely helpful. After checking it out, I agree this is a keeper. Here is the video followed by a summary of the key points. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
How to Fix Your Chipping: Pro Tips from Kevin Kisner
Tip #1: Slow it down. (Don’t rush your tempo).
Tip #2: Butt of your grip and the center of your chest have to move at the same rate all the time.
Tip #3: Practice with one arm. It will help with body movement to get through the ball and make solid contact.
Tip #4: Keep your elbow tucked into your side to help with the movement of your chest and pelvis through the ball.
Tip #5: Hit the ground under the ball.
Tip #6: Always tuck your elbows into your body. On all chips!
Tip #7: The wedge is supposed to hit the ground.
Tip #8: (similar to #2) Your grip and your chest need to move at the same rate so you don’t skull it.
Tip #9: To go higher open the face.
Tip #10: It’s not how much faster you can swing it. It’s how much bigger you can turn it all together at the same rate.
Tip #11: Don’t use hands, use your body!
Most important tip:
Make the zipper of the jacket and the butt of the grip move at the same speed
During the video, he also talked about imagining there is a heavy weight behind the shaft, and imagine using your body muscles to push that weight back with the shaft. Interestingly, he talked about for full swing imagining swinging a heavy kettle bell – I’m wondering if this was before Dr. Kwon became popular with his great kettlebell routines.
